Overview

A classically structured First Growth from the Margaux appellation, the 2002 Château Margaux is notable for its unusually high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The final blend comprises 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, reflecting the challenges faced by Merlot during the growing season. The wine has received 95 points from Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate and 94 points from Decanter.

Vintage

Adverse conditions during flowering caused severe millerandage in the old Merlot plots, while the summer remained cool and relatively humid, particularly in August. Conditions changed from September, when hot, dry and sunny weather continued through the end of harvest. The Cabernet varieties benefited considerably from this late improvement, while Merlot represented one of the lowest proportions in the final blend in the estate's history. Picking began on 30 September.

Producer Tasting Notes

Château Margaux, October 2025:
“Today, Château Margaux 2002 has gained even more finesse, without losing any of that tight-knit tannic structure which promises excellent ageing. We recommend waiting ideally a few more years before opening it, even though it already offers considerable pleasure.”
