Château d’Yquem is the undisputed icon of Sauternes, and the only estate classified as Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Known for meticulous fruit selection, low yields, and unparalleled attention to detail, d’Yquem produces wines of legendary richness, balance, and longevity.
Vineyard
Located on the highest point of Sauternes, the vineyard benefits from gravelly soils over clay and limestone, and a unique microclimate that encourages noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). Harvesting is conducted in multiple passes, often berry by berry, ensuring only perfectly botrytised grapes are used.
Vintage
2002 was a difficult year in Bordeaux overall, with cooler, wet conditions. In Sauternes, noble rot developed only partially and inconsistently, making it one of the less intense vintages. However, Château d’Yquem’s rigorous vineyard selection and concentration on only the finest fruit resulted in a lighter, more elegant style that still reflects the estate’s hallmark precision.
Tasting Notes
The 2002 d’Yquem shows a bright golden colour. Aromas of apricot, candied citrus, honey, and pineapple are complemented by notes of saffron and toasted almond. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and elegant rather than opulent, with flavours of citrus peel, dried stone fruits, and subtle spice. Balanced sweetness is lifted by vibrant acidity, giving a clean, refined finish. This vintage is approachable and charming, though not as powerful as great Yquem years.
Critics’ Acclaim
-
90–92 points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
-
17/20 – Jancis Robinson
The 2002 is often described as a “lighter” Yquem, admired for its finesse and drinkability rather than monumental power.
