The 2001 Henschke Mount Edelstone Shiraz is a magnificent mature single-vineyard Shiraz from one of Australia’s oldest and most revered vineyards. Produced by Henschke, Mount Edelstone is sourced from ungrafted Shiraz vines planted in 1912 in the Eden Valley, delivering wines of remarkable pedigree, elegance, and longevity.
The 2001 vintage in South Australia is widely regarded as exceptional, producing wines with outstanding concentration, balance, and ageing potential. In Eden Valley, cooler conditions and low-yielding old vines contributed to a Shiraz of both power and finesse, allowing Mount Edelstone to develop gracefully over more than two decades.
Fruit was hand-harvested and traditionally vinified before maturation in French and American oak hogsheads, allowing the wine to gain complexity and structural harmony while preserving the purity and signature character of the vineyard.
Now beautifully mature, the wine reveals a deeply complex bouquet of blackberry, dark plum, and dried cherry layered with notes of black pepper, cedar, leather, tobacco leaf, dark chocolate, spice, and earthy savoury nuance. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with silky, resolved tannins, vibrant acidity, and exceptional length. Despite its age, the wine retains freshness and structural integrity, hallmarks of great Eden Valley Shiraz.
Drinking superbly now with careful decanting, the 2001 Mount Edelstone Shiraz remains a compelling example of the extraordinary ageing capacity of Henschke’s historic vineyard. Well-stored bottles may continue to evolve gracefully over the coming decade.
