Expert tasting note: (2001 vintage) "Deep, dark ruby-red color, is very nearly opaque. Cassis fruit on the nose is quite tight. The palate is also closed & dominated by cedar. Nice fresh acidity gives the wine bite as the cassis fruit opens. The tannic structure is ungenerous & lacks suppleness at present. The cedary oak is well-handled & attractive. Alcohol is in balance & the finish is long & cedary, but the wine needs time for its fruit to open." - 11/05 DCAMW

In 1997, Château Mouton Rothschild experienced unique climatic conditions. The year began with dry and warm weather, significantly raising average temperatures from late January onwards, prompting early vine bud formation in early March. Flowering occurred evenly across varieties, with mid-flowering occurring between May 20th and 24th. Mid-veraison followed between July 24th and August 1st, about 15 days earlier than usual but varying by grape type. August was unusually hot and humid, resembling tropical conditions with three days of 100% humidity. Vigilant pest and disease management ensured the crop remained in excellent condition despite these challenges, although the ripening process was temporarily halted due to uneven grape ripening. Ideal weather in September ultimately allowed for a high-quality harvest.
