“Medium deep colour. Intense dark berry, paneforte, herb garden aromas. Sweet paneforte, roasted chestnut flavours, plentiful graphite tannins and underlying malty nuances. Finishes chocolaty firm, sweet fruited and long. Delicious complexity, vinosity and richness. Now – 2030.”
94/100 - Andrew Caillard MW
1999 Vintage. Tasted: 8 August 2017. Drink Window: Now-2030.
“Medium deep crimson. Fresh dark chocolate, mocha, dark cherry aromas with hints of polished leather and spice. Generous wine with deep set dark chocolate, mocha dark cherry flavours, plenty of mid palate richness, fine sinewy slightly leafy textures and integrated acidity. Finishes long and sweet. Very attractive wine with complexity and voice of place. 15.5% Alc 94 points Now- 2030”
94/100 - James Halliday
1999 Vintage. Tasted: 28 Apr 2001. Published: 11 July 2021.
“Dense purple-red; an almost impenetrable array of black fruits dominate the bouquet, with some savoury aspects, and well-balanced and integrated oak. The strong, dense and potent palate has lots of bitter chocolate flavours along with the riper black fruit spectrum of the bouquet; a long, lingering finish has powerful but balanced tannins, and likewise oak. I have beaten the alcohol horse enough to say no more.”
92/100 - Wine & Spirits Magazine
1999 Vintage. Tasted: Feb 2002.
88/100 - Andrew Caillard MW
1999 Vintage. Tasted: August 2007.
“Deep colour. Mint chocolate/ brambly aromas with touches of aniseed. Well concentrated wine with mint chocolate flavours and peppery alcohol, fine bristling dry tannins. Finishes firm and chocolaty. Still quite elemental. Needs more time. 2010-2025. 88 points.”
About This Wine
Jasper Hill Georgia's Paddock Shiraz 1999 is a Heathcote Shiraz from Victoria, Australia.
At time of release, it was described as a classic “Georgia’s” in every respect, from its depth of vibrant colour, through its typical sweet red berry, tar and mocha aromas, to its complex palate and powerful yet supple tannins.
It was described as having great balance and drinkability, while also being very suitable for cellaring around 15 years.
Georgia’s Paddock grapes were supplemented with grapes grown by friends within the Heathcote region. The wine follows on with a fresh, indulgent approach to a wine worth savouring.
The soils are derived from Cambrian period basaltic rock of 500/600 million years age. In Heathcote, these soils are unusually deep, up to 4 metres, rusty red coloured, well drained, gravelly loams on undulating hillsides, with good moisture retention capabilities.
Producer Notes
Vibrant magenta colour with a rich dark berry nose. Fabulous hit of fresh red fruits, a spicy luscious mouth feel and great more-ish length.
About the Producer
Jasper Hill is a Heathcote institution and was one of the pioneers of the region. The estate was founded by Ron and Elva Laughton in 1975 and comprises two vineyards planted on Cambrian soils more than 500 million years old.
The two vineyards, Emily's Paddock and Georgia's Paddock, are 1 km apart and are named after the Laughton daughters Emily and Georgia.
The estate is farmed using organic principles. No synthetic chemicals have ever been used in the vineyards. The low-yielding vineyards are dry grown and rely on natural rainfall only.
The vines are planted on their own roots to retain purity of style, and all picking and pruning is carried out by hand.
