Producer Notes
Magill Estate Shiraz is Penfolds’ only single-vineyard wine, produced from grapes grown on the remaining five hectares of the historic vineyard established by Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold in 1844.
The Magill Estate vineyard consists entirely of Shiraz vines aged between 25 and 45 years, and uses the same open fermenters employed for the Grange and Special Bin reds of the 1950s and 1960s. This wine emphasizes structure and fruit over sheer power.
First made in 1983, Magill Estate Shiraz was created by Chief Winemaker Don Ditter in collaboration with Max Schubert, who continued consulting with Penfolds after his retirement.
Vintage Notes
The 1997 vintage enjoyed a cool summer followed by warm weather in late March and April. Winter rainfall was excellent across most districts, with good rains continuing into September and past bud-burst.
Producer Tasting Notes
“Colour: Deep plum red.
Nose: Exotic, with lifted floral aromas combining with dark chocolate, cinnamon, citrus peel spice and tobacco. The savoury background recalls cold meats.
Palate: Distinctive, spicy Shiraz fruit typical of the region, with ripe stone fruit flavours, assertive tannins and a leathery finish.”
