Overview

The 1995 Penfolds St Henri Shiraz is a mature large-format release of one of Penfolds' most distinctive wines. Unlike many powerful Australian Shiraz styles, St Henri does not rely on new oak. Instead, it is matured mostly in large old oak casks, allowing its fruit, structure and bottle-aged complexity to define the wine.

Developed by former Penfolds winemaker John Davoren in 1956, St Henri was created as a refined, claret-inspired Shiraz with the capacity to age. This 1.5L Magnum offers added collector appeal and slower large-format development.

Vintage & Winemaking

The 1995 St Henri is a multi-regional South Australian blend sourced from Barossa Valley, Eden Valley, McLaren Vale and Padthaway. Spring frost affected yields in Barossa Valley and Padthaway, while early March rainfall created a split vintage, with the warmer northern regions harvested in excellent mild conditions before the rain.

The wine is made from Shiraz with a Cabernet Sauvignon component and was aged for 14 months in 2000 litre old oak casks, imparting minimal overt oak character and preserving the classic fruit-led St Henri style.
