Château Mouton Rothschild, one of the five First Growths of Bordeaux, stands as a global icon. Its bold personality, legendary heritage, and artist-designed labels make it a benchmark for Pauillac and for collectors worldwide.
Vineyard
The estate’s vineyards, located on the famed “Plateau de Mouton” in Pauillac, rest on deep gravel soils over a limestone base—ideal terroir for Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1994, the blend reflected the estate’s classic structure: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, with Petit Verdot occasionally contributing.
Vintage
1994 was marked by challenges and rewards. A mild winter and warm spring encouraged early budbreak, followed by a cool, unsettled summer. September rain initially worried vignerons, but a stretch of fine weather in late September allowed grapes to achieve good ripeness, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. The vintage produced structured, firmly tannic wines with strong aging potential.
Tasting Notes
The 1994 Mouton Rothschild shows a deep ruby hue with brick reflections. The nose opens with blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, and earthy spice, underpinned by graphite and subtle roasted coffee notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied and muscular, with firm tannins, dark fruit, leather, and a mineral edge. The finish is long, dry, and layered, still showing vitality with proper cellaring.
Label Art
The 1994 label was designed by Karel Appel, a Dutch painter and sculptor associated with the CoBrA avant-garde movement. His vibrant, expressive style created a colorful, abstract composition that symbolized energy and creativity, making this vintage’s label highly recognizable in the Mouton series.
