Overview

Penfolds St. Henri is a multi-regional South Australian Shiraz with a distinctive place in the Penfolds story. Its traditional style relies on maturation in large, seasoned oak rather than prominent new-oak influence, producing a powerful, long-lived expression that has become a favourite among Penfolds collectors.

Vintage

After an extraordinarily wet spring and early summer, a long, fine autumn enabled full ripeness to be achieved. Penfolds noted that the 1993 release was highly likely to develop similarly to the top-quality 1991, 1986 and 1983 vintages.

Vineyard

The 1993 St. Henri draws on South Australian vineyard sources including the Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, Eden Valley and McLaren Vale.

Winemaking

The wine was matured for 12 months in large old oak casks aged approximately 30–40 years.

“Bright red-purple in colour. The wine is overtly fruit-driven with complex, sweet, stewed plum/berried fruit and hints of pepper and liquorice. Underlying oak maturation characters add depth and complexity. This highly individual, full bodied red has concentrated, powerful and mouth filling berry flavours and great palate length. Reflecting its origins the wine features ripe plum and mulberry Shiraz flavours derived from the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale.” — Penfolds
