93/100 — Andrew Caillard MW · Tasted: 8th August 2017
“Medium deep crimson. Soupy developed mocha, dark fruits with roasted espresso notes. Very well balanced wine with deep set dark berry mocha flavours, chocolaty dense tannins and underlying spicy notes. Finishes chocolaty firm, long and sweet. Impressive youthful swagger beneath its aging frame. 13% Alc 93 points Now – 2025”
91/100 — Andrew Caillard MW · Tasted: 17th August 2012
“Deep medium colour. Fresh complex dark berry, mushroom, praline aromas and flavours. Sweet dark berry, praline, mushroom fruit, lovely mid palate buoyancy and leafy dry tannin. Finishes leafy firm but long and flavourful. Still has energy and freshness, vinosity! Obviously a better bottle than in 2007! Now – 91 points”
79/100 — Andrew Caillard MW · Tasted: August 2007
“Medium deep colour. Fresh mint/ plum/ wet stone aromas. The palate is well concentrated with mint. dark cherry/ leather flavours and sinewy dry but long tannins. Builds up chalky dry. Quite muscular with acid poking out. Will hold but won’t get better. Drink up – Now. 79 points.”
About This Wine
1988 Jasper Hill Georgia and Friends Shiraz is a special release made from Georgia’s Paddock fruit supplemented with other Central Victorian Shiraz fruit.
After the restoration of bushfire ravaged Georgia’s Paddock, the vines produced some fruit in the 1988 vintage. Even though about twenty percent of the vines were killed and the balance traumatised, the Georgia’s Paddock crop was superb in quality but insufficient in volume.
The wine was supplemented with a thirty percent addition of Central Victorian Shiraz fruit from Graeme Leith and Sue Mackinnon of Passing Clouds, Kingower and Paul Osicka of Osicka’s Vineyards, Graytown to produce “Georgia & Friends Shiraz”.
A successful follow-on to the 1987 “Friends Shiraz,” this intense wine shows great depth of complex berry-like flavours and matching up-lifted aromas, with balancing acid and soft American oak tannins.
