The 1987 Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz comes from the early years of this single-vineyard Adelaide wine. Its significance lies in its connection to Penfoldsā€™ original vineyard and the development of a distinct estate style, first released with the 1983 vintage.

Magill sits on Adelaideā€™s eastern fringe, just eight kilometres from the city centre. Fruit is grown, vinified and matured at the historic estate, preserving the relationship between vineyard and winery.

Vintage & Winemaking

Magill Estateā€™s traditional approach centres on hand picking, open fermentation and basket pressing. French and American oak form part of the wineā€™s established maturation style.

In the 2013 seventh edition of Rewards of Patience, Andrew Caillard MW assessed most bottles of the 1987 as past their peak. This is a mature back-vintage wine; further improvement is not promised, and individual bottle development can vary.
