Torbreck The Laird & The Forebea 2020 New Release
Echo RenShare
The Laird & The Forebear sit at the pinnacle of Torbreck's portfolio, as incredibly special single-site expressions of Barossa Shiraz from our most distinctive vineyards.
2020 was a challenging season to manage for both grower and winemaker, with yields much lower than anticipated. Our older vineyards with deeper roots remained steadfast under these conditions and produced small volumes of deeply concentrated wines from the lower yields.
While the volume of wines released have been small, the overall quality has created deeply coloured and textured wines that resonate their place of origin.
THE LAIRD
As one of the most revered sites in the Barossa Valley, The Laird Vineyard effortlessly showcases the power, complexity and longevity of Barossa Shiraz. This south facing vineyard, nestled in the ridge between Seppeltsfield and Marananga and planted in 1958, demonstrates its unique soil structure, micro-climate and distinctive clone resulting in a wine of extraordinary power and restraint. Meticulously hand-tended, the five-acre vineyard yields low quantities of small, concentrated berries, resulting in a powerful and luxurious wine, with a dense, complex and alluring palate that can be cellared for decades in one’s collection of the finest wines of the world.

THE FOREBEAR
The Forebear is produced from a single one acre vineyard established in the early 1850s, planted by the first generation of European settlers. They are Torbreck’s oldest vines. Located at the Hillside vineyard near Lyndoch, these very old and gnarly vines benefit from the cooler evening breezes that flow through the southern end of the Barossa Valley, producing an elegant style of shiraz, renowned for its lifted floral notes and red fruit flavours intertwined with subtle rounded tannins. With an unmistakable degree of finesse and complexity, it is a wine with distinct sense of place that speaks of its heritage and its forebears.
'So much concentration and old-vine character that is built for the ages. Exceptional' 98 points, JamesSuckling.com
'A monumental wine, it needs space and quiet to be able to absorb the layers of complexity and undulating waves of flavor through the finish' 98 points, The Wine Advocate
