Pōkeno First Fill Casks is a limited New Zealand Single Malt Whisky created exclusively for The Whisky Club. Released as the Club's July 2025 Whisky of the Month, this one-off expression brings together a selection of Pōkeno's richest first-fill casks to create a full-bodied, layered and indulgent style.
Bottled at 48.2% ABV, the whisky combines the richness of Spanish PX and Moscatel casks with American oak ex-Bourbon and toasted, caramelised new American oak. The result is a weighty yet balanced single malt filled with dark fruit, butterscotch, warm spice and dessert-like complexity.
Maturation & Production
Pōkeno First Fill Casks is a one-off marriage of first-fill casks selected for richness and depth. The maturation profile includes Spanish PX, Spanish Moscatel, new American oak and American oak ex-Bourbon casks, combining dried-fruit sweetness with vanilla, caramel, spice and oak structure.
The whisky is bottled at 48.2% ABV without chill filtration or added colour. Pōkeno produces its spirit using New Zealand Laureate barley sourced from family-owned farms in Canterbury, with fermentation lasting approximately 72 to 80 hours before slow double distillation designed to maximise copper contact and spirit purity.

Tasting Notes
Appearance
Deep burnt umber with a rich, polished appearance.
Aroma
Rich dark butterscotch leads into syrupy stewed plum and dark cherry, layered with toasted cinnamon, toffee apple and bittersweet marmalade.
Palate
Deep, layered and indulgent, with flavours reminiscent of spiced brioche French toast and tiramisu. The combination of sweet first-fill casks creates a rich texture while maintaining balance and definition.
Finish
Long and velvety, with lingering cherry chocolate, macerated raisin, warm spice and rich oak sweetness.
