Overview
Tolpuddle Vineyard Chardonnay is a single-vineyard, cool-climate Chardonnay from Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. The 2025 vintage combines impressive concentration with taut acidity, mineral precision and savoury complexity, reinforcing Tolpuddle’s reputation as one of Australia’s benchmark Chardonnay producers.
Vintage
Winter rainfall was in line with the long-term average, maintaining soil moisture and supporting steady early growth, while a slightly drier spring created ideal flowering conditions. A mild summer with timely rainfall delivered healthy canopies and well-formed bunches, followed by a cool, dry lead-up to veraison that encouraged slow, even ripening and excellent acid retention. Harvest ran slightly later than previous seasons, producing balanced fruit with structure.
Vineyard
Tolpuddle Vineyard was established in 1988 in the Coal River Valley, approximately 20 minutes from Hobart in Tasmania’s south-east. The mature Chardonnay vines face north-east on gently sloping ground, with light silica over sandstone soils and moderate vine vigour.
The Coal River Valley combines an extremely cool climate with relatively low rainfall of approximately 500mm per year. These cool, comparatively dry conditions support slow autumn ripening while reducing the disease pressure associated with heavier rainfall.
Winemaking
All fruit was hand-picked, whole bunch pressed and fermented in French oak. The wine spent ten months in barrel with gentle stirring as required, followed by a further four months resting in tank on lees.
Producer Tasting Notes
Palate
Powerful yet precise, with impressive concentration and energy. Tightly coiled at first, revealing white flower and jasmine, layered with a complex, savoury lees character. The palate carries weight and extract while remaining clean and driven by a firm core of acidity. Lime zest and tonic notes bring freshness and subtle astringency to the finish.
Critic Reviews
97+ Points — Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion
“Tight and intricately detailed, as always, with bright citrus, peach and white nectarine fruits overseen by a mist of flint and struck-match complexity.”
97 Points — Campbell Mattinson, CampbellMattinson.com
“This edition of Tolpuddle Chardonnay is a classic in the making. It has three key features: unfurled complexity, an impression of effortlessness, and outstanding length.”
97 Points — Tom Kline, The Wine Pilot
“This is a wine that has, since Tolpuddle's first release in 2013, become one of the benchmarks for Australian Chardonnay – taut, mineral, and precise.”
Producer
Tolpuddle Vineyard was established in 1988 and is dedicated to premium single-vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vineyard takes its name from the Tolpuddle Martyrs, English agricultural labourers transported to Tasmania in 1834 after forming an agricultural union.
The vineyard’s north-east aspect helps maximise sunlight in the cool Tasmanian climate, while light silica and sandstone soils naturally moderate vine vigour. Tolpuddle places its primary emphasis on viticulture, supported by traditional, low-intervention practices in the winery.
