Founded by Barry and Jan Morey in 1985, Sorrenberg is one of Beechworth’s most revered small wineries — a cult producer celebrated for its uncompromising commitment to biodynamic viticulture and traditional, hands-off winemaking. Every Sorrenberg release reflects patience, integrity, and a deep connection to its cool-climate granite soils.
Vineyard
The estate vineyard, situated at an elevation of around 560 metres, is farmed biodynamically and dry-grown, producing naturally low yields of exceptional fruit purity. Beechworth’s granite soils and cool nights deliver Chardonnay grapes with remarkable tension, texture, and mineral drive.
Winemaking
Whole-bunch pressed juice was fermented with wild yeasts in French oak barriques (approximately 25–30% new) and matured on lees for 10–11 months with regular bâtonnage. The result is a wine of layered complexity — integrating richness, freshness, and crystalline precision in perfect harmony.
Vintage
The 2024 vintage in Beechworth was cool and even, following mild spring and steady ripening through autumn. Conditions yielded fruit of superb balance, excellent acidity, and expressive aromatics — a year reminiscent of the region’s finest modern vintages.
Tasting Notes
The 2024 Sorrenberg Chardonnay reveals aromas of white peach, lemon curd, and flint, unfolding with notes of hazelnut, brioche, and subtle spice. The palate is textural yet taut — combining creamy mid-palate weight with bright acidity and mineral precision. The finish is long, saline, and effortlessly elegant, promising years of graceful evolution.
