The 2023 Giant Steps Sexton Vineyard Chardonnay is a benchmark single-vineyard Chardonnay from the Yarra Valley, showcasing the precision, purity, and site expression that have established Giant Steps among Australia's leading producers of cool-climate Chardonnay.
Sourced exclusively from the renowned Sexton Vineyard in Gruyere, the site sits on a north-facing slope at approximately 130 metres elevation. The vineyard's distinctive grey clay loam soils, combined with mature vine age and meticulous viticulture, consistently produce Chardonnay of remarkable concentration, texture, and mineral complexity.
The 2023 growing season was characterised by cool conditions and a long, slow ripening period, allowing the fruit to develop exceptional flavour intensity while retaining vibrant natural acidity. Careful hand harvesting and parcel selection ensured only the finest fruit was included in this single-vineyard bottling.
Whole-bunch pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels, the wine underwent maturation on lees to build texture and complexity while preserving freshness and vineyard character. The result is a Chardonnay of outstanding balance and refinement.
The bouquet is intensely aromatic, revealing layers of white peach, nectarine, lemon curd, grapefruit zest, and citrus blossom, complemented by subtle notes of struck flint, almond meal, oatmeal, and finely integrated French oak. The palate is precise and beautifully structured, with concentrated stone fruit flavours framed by vibrant acidity and a distinctive mineral drive. Fine texture and impressive persistence lead to a long, elegant finish.
Combining power and finesse, the 2023 Sexton Vineyard Chardonnay is already captivating in its youth yet possesses the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over the next 8–15 years.
