About This Wine

Devotus Single Vineyard Pinot Noir is produced in Martinborough, New Zealand from vines ranging from 24 to 32 years of age, including Dijon 667, 777, 114, 115 clones and the Abel clone.

The vineyard is non-irrigated and farmed organically and sustainably. Organic and sustainable viticulture practices include mechanical cultivation, crop rotation with vineyard cover crops and ploughing cover crops back into the soil for organic vine nutrition.

Martinborough experienced a very challenging growing season over 2022/2023. The season began with good budburst following frost in September 2022, followed by good flowering and generous fruit-set in November 2022. Heavy summer rainfall in late December and January increased disease pressure from high humidity and moisture, requiring hand-plucking to open the vine canopy and manual removal of imperfect bunches.

The vineyard was low yielding at 1.0 ton/acre for the 2023 vintage.

Fruit was harvested on 28 March 2023 with sugar levels at 22.0°Brix.

Following careful sorting of 15% of the whole bunches, cold maceration was conducted at 10°C for two days. Fermentation was carried out with wild yeasts from the vineyard. Total skin contact time was 9 days. Maturation was completed in seasoned French oak barrels for 10 months with no fining and no filtration.

Producer Notes

Earthy, forest floor and porcini aromas on the nose. Generous, round, complex and rich on the palate with fresh lively acidity. Overall style is one of low intervention, a pure expression of the 2023 vintage, of the Martinborough Terrace, and particularly of the vineyard.

The wine will benefit from cellaring until 2028 and can be confidently cellared for at least 15 years after that to 2038.
