97/100 — Wine Orbit · 2022 Vintage, Tasted: 30 Dec 2022
“Gorgeously seductive and enticing, the bouquet shows ripe cherry, dried herb, clove, warm mushroom and toasted almond characters. The palate displays excellent weight and fine flow, beautifully framed by layers of polished tannins. Graceful and immensely complex.”
96/100 — Raymond Chan Wine Reviews · 2022 Vintage, Tasted: 23 Nov 2023
“Moderately deep ruby-red, lighter on the rim. The nose is elegantly presented, with a whiff of medicinal / herbaceous nuance, unfolding Bing cherry, strawberry, raspberry, hibiscus, vanilla and spices. Medium-bodied aromas of strawberry, cherry and raspberry intertwined with hibiscus, vanilla, and cinnamon, along with thyme, vine leaf and a suggestion of liquorice. Ripe acidity laces the palate, and dusty tannin lightly adorns and carries a captivating closing. A graceful Pinot Noir shows deep nuances and balanced spice on a refined, dusty mouthfeel. Match with roasted pigeon and char-grilled pork neck over the next 12+ years. Fruit from Gibbston Highway & Gibbston Back Rd, fermented with 25% whole bunch, aged 11 months in French oak, 30% new oak, 14% new oak.”
94/100 — Robert Parker Wine Advocate · 2022 Vintage, Tasted: 06 Jun 2025
“The 2022 Gibbston Vineyard Pinot Noir speaks of cocoa and bramble, woodsy spice and purple fruit. This has all the concentration and distinction of a Chinese goji berry, with black cherry, aniseed, licorice and crushed rocks. Central Otago is a beautiful, stark place of mountains and vista, and this wine echoes that. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.”
About This Wine
Valli Gibbston Pinot Noir is sourced from Gibbston Highway and Gibbston Back Road in Gibbston, Central Otago, with vineyards planted in 1995, 2000 and 2003. The sites sit at 320–475m altitude on alluvial loess over firm river gravels and colluviums.
Fruit was harvested across multiple picks from late March to mid-April 2022. Fermentation included 25% whole bunch and a 25-day cuvaison, followed by 11 months in French oak with 30% new oak. The wine was made with no fining and no filtering.
