94/100 — Stuart Knox, The Real Review · 2022 Vintage · 11 Nov 2024 · Drinking Window: 2024-2036
"Ink black core to a deep ruby red rim. Mulberry, dark chocolate and fresh roast coffee aromatics. Deep and full throttled blue and purple fruits fill the senses. Plush and inviting with layers of mocha and vanilla spices overlying that lovely rich fruit. Tannins work to guide it long, not pressing but ensuring carry and drive to the finish."
About This Wine
The 2022 Paxton Elizabeth Jean EJ 125 Yr Shiraz is made from 137-year-old vines from Thomas Block on Sand Road in McLaren Vale.
The 2022 season in McLaren Vale brought soil-moistening winter rain, a cool summer and fine days through most of March, allowing picking decisions that preserved natural acidity.
This limited-release flagship Shiraz is named after David Paxton's mother and family matriarch, Elizabeth Jean. The Shiraz vines are among the oldest in McLaren Vale and are carefully hand pruned and thinned to ensure low and uniform yields.
Producer Notes
Although still very young, the wine shows classic McLaren Vale Shiraz characteristics, with an elegant, delicate front exploding with a concentration of savoury fruit, supported by full, silky tannins unique to old vine wine.
About the Producer
Paxton are leaders in both organic and biodynamic viticulture and winemaking. Fruit for all wines are sourced solely from estate vineyards in McLaren Vale, South Australia.
In 2000 the family released their first wine under the Paxton label: the 1998 Paxton Shiraz.
