The Wine Front – 95 Points (Mike Bennie)
2019 vintage tasted Jun 2024; Drink 2025–2035+
“Fine-boned, sleek in texture, succulent, granular in spice character, dark red cherry fruit with dashes of rose hip tea, peppery lift, clove and hints of game meat and truffle. Tightly wound yet refreshing, with vibrant fruit, inward concentration, gloss and prettiness. Exceptional flavour extension, pointing directly at fine-wine territory.”
About This Wine
This is the first straight Syrah bottled at Mount Mary, released under the Réflexion label. It is made entirely from estate-grown fruit from the youngest plantings, produced in a style inspired by the Northern Rhône. The wine shows fruit sweetness and weight alongside savoury and spice complexity from 30% whole bunch fermentation. It reflects the developing character of these vines while maintaining elegance, restraint and concentration.
About the Winery
Mount Mary is a small, highly regarded winery in the Yarra Valley, founded by Dr John Middleton in 1972. Since the first vintage in 1976, it has become one of Australia’s most respected producers. The estate faces due north, capturing optimal sunlight, and is known for purity of fruit and structural poise. Today the winery is overseen by David Middleton, with Sam Middleton as winemaker, continuing the original vision. Réflexion wines are produced exclusively from estate-grown fruit, primarily from younger vines, and released in limited quantities depending on the vintage.
