Overview
Les Cassagnes de La Nerthe is Château La Nerthe’s organically farmed Côtes du Rhône Villages red, created in a vibrant and approachable Southern Rhône style. It combines the generosity of Grenache with Syrah’s spice and Mourvèdre’s savoury structure.
The 2022 blend comprises 60% Grenache Noir, 32% Syrah, 7% Mourvèdre and 1% other permitted varieties. Sourced from vines averaging 40 years of age, it offers juicy Mediterranean fruit, delicate tannins and excellent freshness despite the warm, dry vintage.
The wine was awarded Two Stars and Coup de Cœur by Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2025 and received 92 points from The Wine Front.
Vintage
Following a relatively cold and dry 2021 winter, the 2022 growing season was marked by limited rainfall. A mild, dry spring was followed by an unusually early and warm summer, bringing harvest forward to mid-August.
The estate’s Grenache vines navigated the extreme conditions particularly well, producing wines with generous fruit but without excessive weight or heaviness.
Vineyards and Terroir
The vineyards are planted on a highly permeable mixture of sand, clay and fragmented limestone. These free-draining soils help produce fleshy yet balanced wines with freshness and aromatic clarity.
The vines have an average age of approximately 40 years and are cultivated according to certified organic farming practices.
Winemaking
The fruit was selected parcel by parcel. Colour and tannin extraction was deliberately gentle, with several light pump-overs performed each day.
The three principal varieties were co-fermented and remained on skins for approximately three to four weeks. The final blend was matured on fine lees for one year in stainless-steel or concrete vats, preserving its fruit purity and supple texture.
Producer Tasting Notes
A deep garnet colour introduces a fragrant bouquet of red berries, blackcurrant buds, liquorice and delicate floral notes.
The palate offers crisp plum fruit layered with Mediterranean garrigue and thyme. Its structure balances energy with roundness, while fine, delicate tannins lead into a fresh, lightly spiced finish that evokes the landscape of Provence.
