Overview
For more than 20 vintages, Goose-Yard Block Shiraz has served as a flagship expression of Schubert Estate. Sourced exclusively from Block 5 at the crest of the Roennfeldt Road vineyard in the western Barossa Valley, it combines concentrated dark fruit, savoury complexity and the distinctive mineral and velvety tannin character of this individual site.
Vineyard
The fruit comes entirely from Block 5 of Schubert Estateās Roennfeldt Road vineyard. Positioned on the crest of what was once an ancient riverbed, the block overlooks the Barossa Valley floor to the east.
Rounded, weathered pebble stones cover light sandy clay loam topsoils over layers of red clay, soil carbonate and siltstone rock. The combination provides both water-holding capacity and free drainage. Vineyard management focuses on small bunches and concentrated fruit, producing wines with distinctive mineral characters and velvety tannins.
Viticulture
Schubert Estate follows a low-intervention, site-focused approach to viticulture, with individual vineyard blocks managed according to their soils, varieties and growing conditions. The estate is certified with Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.
Producer Tasting Notes
The core of the wine is exceptionally dark, lightening to a bright ruby towards the rim. On the nose there is an intense bouquet of dark chocolate, black plums, liquorice and black olive tapenade. Secondary notes of cedar oak spice, nutmeg, and vanilla bean intermingle with faint wafts of boot polish and patent leather which lend complexity and interest. On the palate there is a complex amalgam of savoury dark fruit notes that fill the mouth coupled with cedar-oak spice and slatey tannins. A fine acid line provides drive and freshness.

95/100 ā Winepilot
āA quiet start ā this is going to be taut one, even at five years of age and itās going to need more time. Red earth, black and purple fruits, cedar, blackstrap liquorice, cardamom, cloves, lavender fill the scent and the palate⦠With a decant, everything comes together in a well-structured, elegant whole.ā
