Overview
A classic expression of Hungary's celebrated Tokaj region, this 2019 Aszú 5 Puttonyos is a richly concentrated sweet wine crafted from individually selected, noble rot-affected grapes. Predominantly Furmint, complemented by Hárslevelű and Yellow Muscat, it combines luscious dried fruit, honey and candied citrus characters with vibrant natural acidity and remarkable ageing potential.
With 155.5 g/L residual sugar balanced by 7.24 g/L acidity, the wine offers generous sweetness without sacrificing freshness, elegance or structure.
Winemaking
Aszú production is one of the world's most labour-intensive winemaking traditions. The noble rot-affected berries are individually hand-harvested and carefully selected for their concentration and quality. Approximately 1kg of Aszú berries requires 8–10kg of healthy grapes to produce.
The Aszú berries are macerated with fermenting must before pressing. Following fermentation, the wine is matured for 24 months in used Hungarian oak barrels, followed by approximately 10 months of bottle ageing.
Historically, the term "5 Puttonyos" referred to the number of baskets of Aszú berries added to a traditional Gönci barrel of base wine. Today, Tokaji Aszú classification is determined by analytical criteria, particularly residual sugar levels.
