Barbaresco Crichet Paje
The term Crichet means "high part of the small hill", i.e. the best position for growing Nebbiolo. Pajé refers to the geographical mention of origin.
This wine is the result of the research of Giovanni Roagna, who, after years of experimentation, succeeded in selecting a unique terroir. Over the years, Crichet was aged for longer, as it needed a lot of time to mature. It became the family's personal reserve, used for the most important events. In 1978, Alfredo Roagna decided to make Crichet Paje known to the world. So 1978 is the first vintage that can be found on the market.
This is the highest expression of the wines that our family make. Through it we are able to consider the absolute value of a wine in its complexity and longevity.
Style: Aged for 8 years. Before the 1996 vintage, this wine was labelled as 'Vino da Tavola'.
Vineyard notes: "Crichet Pajé is a micro parcel located within the same area, which is particularly rich in white calcareous soil and has our highest content of active limestone. The Paje vineyard is 0.5 Hectare (1.24 Acres) with a unique microclimate and soil which enjoys a view over the Tanaro river valley. The exposition mitigates the cold winters and hot summers. The vineyard is located in the center of the Pajé designated area with additional area facing Southwest."
"An opulent style, this complex red offers notes of cherry, plum, rose, fresh herbs, licorice, tar and mineral, with layers of flavor and texture unfolding as this builds to a long and nuanced aftertaste, where a stony mineral component lingers. So fresh, it's hard to believe this is closing in on a decade already. Best from 2025 through 2045. 140 cases made." - 98 Points, Wine Spectator
