Overview
Domaine Dujac's Bonnes-Mares is a Grand Cru Pinot Noir from one of the CĂŽte de Nuits' most celebrated vineyards, situated between Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny. The 2014 vintage combines the domaine's traditional whole-bunch-influenced approach, indigenous fermentation and long Ă©levage with the depth and structure of this historic Grand Cru site. It received 95â97 points from The Wine Advocate.
Vintage
Domaine Dujac describes 2014 as a fine vintage. After a warm early season, cooler and wetter summer conditions were followed by dry, sunny weather through September. Cool nights helped preserve acidity while the improved conditions allowed the grapes to reach full ripeness. The domaine began harvesting its red wines on 15 September.
The producer characterised the 2014 reds as concentrated and fleshy, with depth, soft tannins and the capacity to age gracefully.
Vineyard
Dujac's Bonnes-Mares parcel covers approximately 1.4 acres (58 ares). The Grand Cru lies between Morey-Saint-Denis to the north and Chambolle-Musigny to the south, on a steep east-facing hillside with an inclination of approximately 11% and elevations ranging from 278 to 296 metres.
The soils vary across the parcel. The eastern section has reddish-brown soils with frequent crinoidal limestone fragments, while the western section is lighter in colour, less stony and contains small oyster shells. The underlying geology includes limestone rich in marine fossil material and marl containing oyster-shell deposits.
Winemaking
Domaine Dujac vinifies its grapes with little or no destemming depending on the character of the vintage. Indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation, which lasts approximately two weeks. Extraction begins with light punching down before moving to pumping over, with the aim of balancing tannic firmness and suppleness.
After gentle pneumatic pressing, the wine is transferred to the cellar by gravity. Ălevage takes place for approximately 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with new oak forming an important part of the domaine's maturation programme.
