About This Wine
Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Barossa Valley Shiraz showcases single-region Barossa Valley fruit matured exclusively in French oak. First made in 1997, the RWT project—originally named “Red Winemaking Trial”—was established to create an elegant and finely textured counterpoint to Grange. The 2012 vintage benefits from cooler conditions, delivering darker and richer fruit from northern Barossa vineyards where higher clay soils retained moisture and allowed later harvesting.
Tasting Notes
Blackness at the core with a magenta rim. Aromas evolve from Christmas pudding, quince paste and dark chocolate to savoury tones of cured Iberian pork, pistachio, tamari and liquorice root. The palate is powerful and richly textured with impressions of roasted meats, oxtail, slow-cooked beef cheek and dark chocolate with nougat. Viscous, intense and deeply structured with persistent tannins.
