Château Lafite Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s five historic First Growths and among the world’s most prestigious and collectible wines. The 2012 Grand Vin is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant Pauillac of tightly controlled power, remarkable length and characteristically refined Lafite tannins.
Produced following a challenging growing season and rigorous selection at harvest, the wine combines dense structure with freshness and an unexpectedly light, airy tannin profile. It was matured for 20 months in French oak barrels, primarily new, sourced from Lafite’s own cooperage in Pauillac.

Showing the serious side of Lafite, this is big and dark, powered by tannins as much as fruit.
Elegant nose of black fruits with a subtle oak touch. The palate combines power, fullness and a substantial tannic structure.
Estate Tasting Notes
The bouquet is initially reserved before gradually revealing its fruit, accompanied by a noticeable but integrated oak character. The palate is tight and dense, opening through the middle to reveal a solid, compact and harmonious core.
The finish is exceptionally concentrated and persistent, yet the tannins remain remarkably light and airy in the classic Lafite manner. Long, lingering flavours underline the wine’s balance and considerable ageing potential.
Terroir
Château Lafite Rothschild lies at the northern end of Pauillac, bordering the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Its greatest terroirs extend across the 50-hectare Plateau des Carruades, the highest point in Pauillac.
The plateau’s well-drained clay-gravel soils combine excellent water regulation with optimal sun exposure, creating ideal ripening conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. A further 4.5 hectares in neighbouring Saint-Estèphe contain some of the estate’s oldest vines and regularly contribute exceptional fruit to the Grand Vin.
Vintage Conditions
The 2012 Bordeaux season began with a relatively mild winter followed by a particularly wet spring. Heavy April rainfall and a hailstorm on 24 April disrupted flowering and reduced potential yields.
June and July alternated between warmth and humidity, but more stable weather arrived in early August, allowing healthy grapes to complete ripening in favourable conditions. Variation between parcels required extensive selection by the estate’s teams from late September.
Winemaking
Individual parcels were vinified according to their origin and maturity in wooden, stainless-steel or concrete vats. Alcoholic fermentation took place under controlled temperatures with regular pumping over, followed by approximately 20 days of maceration.
After malolactic fermentation, the wines were transferred to French oak barrels made in part by Lafite’s own Pauillac cooperage. The selection for the Grand Vin was conducted in March, with every barrel tasted individually. Only the finest lots entered the final blend, which then matured for a further 20 months in barrel, primarily new oak.
