minor cellar scuffed label
From the renowned Castagna vineyard in Beechworth, Victoria, this 2012 vintage of Un Segreto is a biodynamic red blend of Sangiovese and Syrah, grown in granitic soils under organic and holistic farming practices. The wine reflects Castagnaâs philosophy of minimal intervention and site expression.
On the nose, it opens with aromas of wild red cherry, dried rose petals, herbs, earthy spice, and subtle tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied and structured, with flavours of sour cherry, black plum, clove, and a whisper of smoked meat. The Syrah lends depth and savoury edge, while Sangiovese adds lifted acidity and brightness.
Tannins are fine and integrated, guiding the wine to a persistent finish with notes of mineral, spice, and dried herbs. Elegant yet powerful, this vintage showcases graceful maturity and remarkable balance.
Ideal for pairing with duck, mushroom dishes, slow-roasted meats, or aged cheese. Decanting is recommended. Cellar potential extends comfortably into the early 2030s.
About Castagna
Castagna is one of the leading producers of the Beechworth region.
In 1997, Julian and Carolann Castagna packed up their city life and moved into and caravan on a bare patch of dirt in the Beechworth region of north-east Victoria. Farmed biodynamically from the get go, the Castagnas planted their vineyard with a view to making complex Syrah in the mode of Cote-Rotie and savoury, structural Italian varieties that could compete with their European counterparts.
It's a wildly successful family business that they have built, with son Adam stepping into the winemaking role and a sea of adoring wine collectors awaiting each new release. Castagna wines are true wines of terroir. They taste of where they come from as do all of the great wines of the world.
