“Open minty, menthol, saddle leather nose with vanilla, pepper, tarry cassis and olive streaks. Rich, ripe, round palate with coffee, mocha and blackberry flavours. Dry, elegant tannins on the warm finish. Very young but certainly a top 389.”

🍷 Producer Notes
Penfolds Rewards of Patience, Sixth Edition (2008)
Colour: Deep colour.
Nose: Very concentrated, super-ripe wine with blackcurrant pastille, mulberry, liquorice, and aniseed aromas.
Palate: Rich and fleshy with sweet fruit, mocha oak, and generous blackcurrant, mulberry, and liquorice flavours. Dense, velvety tannins build up to a sinewy, grippy finish.

About the Wine
Created by Max Schubert, the father of Penfolds Grange, Bin 389 is affectionately known as the “Baby Grange.”
It combines Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure with Shiraz’s richness, and part of the blend is matured in barrels that previously held Grange.
The 2001 vintage stands out for its balance, concentration, and cellaring potential—a benchmark Bin 389.
Vintage Notes (2001)
Good winter rains provided an excellent start across South Australia.
Vineyard management ensured low yields and balanced canopies.
Fine summer conditions led to full ripeness and excellent fruit quality in both Cabernet and Shiraz.
