Overview
The 1983 Penfolds Bin 95 Grange Shiraz is a mature release of Australia's most celebrated red wine. Grange is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds' multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy, recognised as a Heritage Icon of South Australia and one of the world's benchmark Shiraz-based wines.
Vintage & Winemaking
The 1983 vintage was shaped by the severe 1982 drought, Ash Wednesday bushfire conditions and record March rains. The blend is 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from Barossa Valley including Kalimna Vineyard, Magill Estate and Modbury Vineyard. The wine was matured for 20 months in new American oak hogsheads.

Tasted October 2024.
Drinking window: 2015 to 2040.
Tasting Notes
Very deep black cherry red. The nose is dense and powerful, showing dark chocolate, spice, plum, briar, mint and coconut from American oak. The palate is highly concentrated, with pronounced extract and tannins balanced by sweet plummy fruit and mature cigar box character.
Food Pairing
Pair with roast lamb, dry-aged beef, venison, game, braised short rib or mature hard cheeses.
Cellaring Potential
This is a mature collectible bottle. JancisRobinson.com lists a drinking window to 2040, though bottle condition, storage and provenance are especially important for a wine of this age. Decant carefully before serving.
