Overview
The 1897 Seppeltsfield Para Vintage Tawny is an exceptionally rare release from Seppeltsfieldâs historic Centennial Collection. Produced from a single vintage and matured in oak for 100 years, it represents a remarkable surviving expression of nineteenth-century Australian winemaking and one of the great fortified wine traditions of the Barossa Valley.
Centennial Collection
Seppeltsfieldâs Centennial Collection forms an unbroken lineage of single-vintage Tawny dating back to 1878. The tradition began when Benno Seppelt reserved a barrel of the 1878 vintage to mature for 100 years, with subsequent vintages laid down to continue the collection.
Maturation
The 1897 Para Vintage Tawny spent a full century maturing in oak before release. This extraordinary ageing period creates immense concentration and complexity, developing the deeply evolved rancio, coffee, caramel, treacle and spice characters associated with Seppeltsfieldâs oldest Para Tawnies.
Critic Reviews
Andrew Caillard MW
âDeep mahogany chestnut. Intense burnt coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, rancio, five spice aromasâŠâ
Max Allen
âIntense rancio and tawny notes; ludicrously treaclyâŠâ
Nick Ryan
âDauntingly viscous. Church incense, sweet-spiced nuts, dark caramel, exotic spice.â
Presentation
This 375ml release is presented in a timber presentation case with a Certificate of Authenticity, enhancing its appeal as a highly collectible release from Seppeltsfieldâs Centennial Collection.
