A rapid progression in berry maturation was kick-started by the Harvest Moon falling right on the spring Equinox, with all varieties ripening at the same time. Hand-harvesting was done in three weeks, bookended by the early sparkling and late red varieties. Yields were down by 20-50% due to 'hen and chicken' (berries of different sizes) from the cold, wet period during flowering, however quality was exceedingly good in both white and red varieties as a result of better ripening conditions. The standout varieties were the later ripening ones, in particular Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, showing beautiful expression of varietal character and above average yields for two varieties that can be fairly challening to grow in the cool Lenswood climate. Indeed, our vineyards cover around 10 acres in the heart of the appellation. We pay particular attention to the vine in order to express the maximum of the terroir. The vineyard is handled by Axelle Courdurié, as a small diamond, from pruning to the harvest, the vinification and ageing with the guidance of the team of Michel Rolland and Hubert de Bouard. Very mindful of detail, accuracy Axelle brings her feminine sensitivity to all our wines from Croix de Labrie. The plots are located on Badon (near Pavie), St. Sulpice (beside the first parcel of Valandraud) and Saint Christophe des Bardes, on the famous plateau with arteries limestones, beside our cellar (dating from 1687). The terroir of Badon is composed of sand and clay with a basement limestone. Soil drainage, brings us finesse. The St. Sulpice compound is serious with clays which cause more depth and density. And finally, the plateau, Saint Christophe des Bardes on clay-arteries limestone soil bringing complexity and density. The vines are more than 90 % Merlot, we have a few rows of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Château Croix de Labrie (90 % Merlot 7% Cabernet Sauvignon 3% Cabernet Franc) produces about 850 to 1000 cs. Château Croix de Labrie is part of the Grand Vin de Bordeaux and is now considered as one of the rarest and one of the great wines of Bordeaux and Saint-Emilion with Ausone, Angelus, Cheval Blanc, Canon, La Mondotte, Pavie, Valandraud. The nose is very elegantly proportioned and tightly concentrated with aromas of ripe blackberry fruit entwined with black plums and blackcurrants. The aromatics show beautiful clarity and fragrance with lifted red and black fruits, along with fragrant spices, oak, and smoke notes. This has great depth, intensity, and finesse. Medium-full-bodied, rich, sumptuous, and luscious layers of ripe black plum and blackberry fruit are lifted by blackcurrants and sweet herbal notes, with fragrant red fruit, leaf, and floral elements. The fruit is enhanced by nuances of spice and subtle oak richness. The wine is driven along with a very refined core of extraction, with the elegance of structure and grip, and excellent linearity, the sweetness enlivened by juicy, ripe acidity. This has the perfect balance of freshness, vitality, and mouth-watering richness, the flavours carrying through to a very long finish. This is a wonderfully elegant, sweetly rich, vibrantly refreshing Sophia, with refined structure and the balance to age 10-15 years. Serve with roast lamb, beef, venison, and with semi-hard cheeses. The grapes are fermented in open fermenters, plunged by hand three times per day, with a portion left to macerate for between 30-40 days to enhance structure and flavour. 70% of the wine is matured in new French oak for a period of 18 months which has resulted in additional complexity and structure as well as helping soften the tannins. The remainder is from the more recently planted – 1989 – petit verdot. Whilst the proportions are different every year, depending on fruit set and cropping levels, roughly speaking the break down is about as follows: 65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% cabernet franc and merlot, and 5% petit verdot. The addition of the petit verdot grapes in the 1990s gave the wine an added backbone of tannin and natural acidity. With its long growing season, the petit verdot grapes are the last to be harvested, usually in mid April.

The vines for the Amelia are all dry farmed – that is, there is no irrigation.
